Step 3: Use the DUATs Flight Planning Tool
Did you know that the number one cause of engine failures in small planes is fuel starvation? Why would a pilot run out of fuel? Usually it is either that they failed to do any preflight planning, or their calculations were inaccurate.
During the cross-country phase of flight training most students are taught how to flight plan using a plotter and an E6B flight computer. You need to know this method, however, there is an easier and more accurate method you should also use: The DUATs flight planning tool.
DUATs is free for anyone with a student pilot certificate or higher. The flight planning tool can, within seconds, provide you with the distance, winds aloft, required heading to each checkpoint, flight time, and fuel required for your flight.
In the video course that follows I show you how to use the DUATs flight planning tool as we use it to plan our flight to Half Moon Bay.
